Over 60 years ago, a milk truck driver in northern New York complained to Julius Sämann, a local scientist, about the smell of spilled milk. Sämann had lived in the Canadian pine forests extracting aromatic oils.  He went to work and, using exceptional fragrances on specialty material, soon invented the first automotive air freshener.  He drew the abstract evergreen shape and gave it the brand name CAR-FRESHNER.

These “LITTLE TREES” proved to be an efficient, high-quality solution to a common problem and soon they were flying off shelves. Orders started rolling in from all over the country and quickly gained a strong international following.  Julius’ pioneering product has become a global symbol of freshness and quality.

Our iconic LITTLE TREES air fresheners have appeared in countless movies and television shows. More popular than ever, they are available in almost 40 fresh fragrances and eye-catching designs. Black Ice remains our best-selling fragrance, followed by classics like Royal Pine, Vanillaroma, and New Car Scent.

All LITTLE TREES air fresheners are made in our two factories in the United States: Watertown, New York; and DeWitt, Iowa. In Europe, Trees are branded ARBRE MAGIQUE and WUNDER-BAUM, and are made in affiliated factories in Italy, Sweden and Switzerland.

In 2013 we launched PERK, a brand designed to wake up your space. The LITTLE TREES air freshener was invented in Watertown, New York, USA in 1952 by Julius Sämann, who had spent five cold years extracting pine needle oils in the Canadian wilderness. He came up with the shape, the name and the fragrance. After more than 50 years, we are very proud of the worldwide reputation we have gained for quality and value, and want to make sure you get exactly what you expect when you buy a product with our brand on it. It should come as no surprise, then, that we are so vigilant about protecting our trademarks.

There’s another reason we don’t tolerate intellectual property theft. We have over twenty registered trademarks (as well as many unregistered ones), and in order to keep them, the law requires that we take action when someone is using them without permission. So, whether you’re calling your new car-seat cushion-fluffing business “Car-Freshner”, or you’re using our Tree in your pet store ads, don’t be surprised if you get a letter (or more) from our legal team.

Then again, lawyers make enough money as it is. If you really want to use one of our trademarks, why not ask us first? We have often said yes. Just ask the people behind many of the movies, TV shows and advertising campaigns that have featured our brands.

CAR-FRESHNER Corporation air fresheners are made from a carefully selected palette of fragrance ingredients approved by the International Fragrance Association (IFRA), a Switzerland-based official representative body of the fragrance industry worldwide.  It’s main purpose is to ensure the safety of fragrance materials through a dedicated science program that protects both the consumer and the environment.

Within IFRA, the Research Institute for Fragrance Materials (RIFM) analyses and evaluates scientific data that is used by IFRA to develop standards on fragrance material usage. This group consists of dermatologists, pathologists, environmental scientists and toxicologists.
